Making Good Decisions
Imagine that you have been tasked with creating a lesson plan for middle school students on resisting peer pressure and making decisions that will be good for health. Your lesson can focus on topics such as a good diet, safe sex, avoiding alcohol and tobacco use, handling bullying, or any other topic that your instructor approves. There are two goals for this lesson: to provide basic information about the topic and to inform the students about good decision making around this topic.
While you can use the information provided in this unit, also use outside sources. Do some Internet research on the topic so that your information is correct. Government agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control, have useful information on these topics, so they are good sources.
Your lesson should focus on how to act when friends are making poor or unhealthy decisions. The content should be engaging and appealing to middle school students while getting important information across.
Make sure that your lesson includes the following:
- A one-page worksheet giving information about your topic: If can include things like facts about the topic, examples of good decision making, and how big a problem the subject of the lesson is in America. Include any websites that you use at the bottom of the worksheet that you create. Include at least one visual presentation of information, such as a chart or a graph, that adds to the students’ understanding of the topic.
- An activity for the students to do: You can make it a group activity, like a role-play exercise. Include the directions for the activity and any materials that it will require. It needs to engage students with the information that you have provided.
- A brief assessment, such as a quiz or some questions based upon the information on the worksheet that you have provided: Be sure to provide an answer key with your assessment.
Remember to keep the lesson plan appropriate for middle school students.
