Computers, the Internet, and other
technology tools have changed the face of modern society and made communication
faster, easier, and more interactive than ever. Social media sites allow
individuals from around the world to connect. Unfortunately, social media also
has created new venues for victimization. Abusive activities before the
Internet age were limited to physical interactions, face-to-face communication,
or written documents. Now these activities have moved to the digital world and
can enter into a child’s home, leaving no safe place for children. These digital
crimes include cyber-bullying, cyber-stalking, and cyber-hate. Juveniles are
often the victims of these kinds of digital abuse. One of the major challenges
for today’s society is to determine how to mitigate digital juvenile
victimization.

For this Discussion, search for and
select a case in which social media played a role in a juvenile’s
victimization. Then select one resource aimed at reducing juvenile
victimization that has occurred through the use of social media, and consider
whether this resource is effective.
