An attributional life cycle assessment was performed of an 8 ounce Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. This lotion is one of the leading daily skin care products in the United States, with 2013 sales of $41.8 million, and 2010 unit sales of 2,200,920 (“Chain Drug Review,” n.d.). The intent of this LCA is to provide relevant information to consumers, and manufacturers of skin care products. The results will inform consumers about the impact of disposal on the environment. The manufacturers of these products will have a better understanding of where the largest impacts associated with the manufacturing process of the lotion come from and what the best disposal option may be for the product container after its use by the consumer. Potentially, the product maker could alter or make the processes efficient used to manufacture the product and its container, or take steps to encourage more responsible disposal methods of the container. The results of the life cycle inventory are presented below, with special attention paid to the manufacture of the lotion and its container, made of HDPE plastic.
Aveeno’s current marketing emphasizes the brand’s dedication to its natural and scientific origins. The company adopted the tagline “Active Naturals” in its marketing campaigns and fully lists out the main ingredients the company uses such as oats, soy, wheat, and seaweed on its website. Given the company’s devotion to its use of natural products. Aveeno prides itself on its responsibility to caring for the Earth’s natural resources and giving back to the community. The brand’s marketing directly appeals to women conscious customers who make an effort to know the products and the brands they are using. Aveeno’s heavily saturated with the company’s celebrity endorsements such as Jennifer Aniston. The company currently uses a mix television ads social media, celebrity endorsement and online advertising to gain and reach customers.
I think that the product described by other students will be successful long term because, the impacts identified include the amount of water used, energy used, and carbon dioxide emitted from the cradle-to-grave processes associated with both the bottle and its contents. Based on the results of this LCA, various suggestions can be made to the manufacturers of this product as well as the consumers in regard to their disposal behaviors of the product. The manufacturing process should be significant to the manufacturers since the greatest impacts come from the manufacturing process itself. Based on the transportation aspects of this LCA, it is shown that impacts related to transportation are the highest when compared to all other processes. Therefore, solutions should be implemented to lower transportation rates and in turn, lower CO2 emissions, overall costs and water use. More efficient truck routes could be considered to reduce overall miles traveled. Furthermore, different storage techniques within these trucks could be considered to move a greater product quantity at one time. End-of-life processing was significant to this LCA, as recycling versus both incineration and landfilling significantly lowered related CO2 emissions. To push forth this idea to consumers, Aveeno could implement different, more progressive marketing campaigns. Different labeling strategies could be considered as well, such as providing clear messages on the bottle that it is recyclable, or making the recyclable symbol on the bottom of the bottle more apparent. These labels could be used to educate the users that the bottle can and should be recycled. Overall, it is hoped that environmental awareness as well as personal awareness of commonly used products such as lotion can come from this life cycle assessment.

Product life cycle is the length of time of a merchandise, wherein, the phase starts with introductory merchandise description and finish with the removal from the industry of the merchandise and its funding. A merchandise life span can be split into various steps such as, introduction, growth, maturity, and decline (Krishnamoorthi, 2012). The brand I decided to complete my research on is Eucerin Skin Care product, which is a part Beiersdorf company. The Beierdorf company was established in 1882 and was later sold to a fellow pharmacist, who started producing products with the Beierdorf name (Eucerin, 2017). Eucerin Skin Care product was created in the 1950’s and assured conservation and renewal of the acid safety skin layer. During the 1970’s Eucerin product was found appropriate for application on all skin types and areas, specifically for application on delicate skin (Eucerin, 2017).
Hence, Eucerin created a medicinal skin treatment program to endure and guard skin’s well-being. Eucerin is endorsed by doctors locally and internationally for a variety of skin problems. Also, in the 1990’s Eucerin announced several products such as: sun care products, shower oil, anti-wrinkle, and acne-prone skin product, then in 2010, they produced men skin care product to help with issues like shaving, rashes, and sensitive skin. Currently, Eucerin products are known worldwide as the most reliable skin care product (Eucerin, 2017). Despite the decline in the customer merchandise market and increased struggle, sales improved for Eucerin merchandise by 3.3% in the first three months of 2017 (earnings summary, 2017). I believe Eucerin Skin Care product is in the growth stage of the life cycle. In this phase, the product is reputable and the objective for the producer is to preserve the industry share they have saved up. This is also an aggressive period and industries need to capitalize sensibly. The organization should deliberate enhancements which might give them an advantage. Also, utilization of the marketing mix (the 4 P’s) is another tactic, and one of the four P’s I would use is promotion through advertising online, television, and social media (Kotler & Keller, 2016).

One goal of waiting-line management is to minimize total costs (Stevenson, 2015). In a queue, the customer will enter into a line to receive some form of service, receive service when it is their turn, and leave (Stevenson, 2015). Inventory can have a negative impact on a waiting line, if inventory is too low to meet the demand of the consumer (Sadjadi, Makui, Dehghani & Pourmohammad, 2016). For example, you are a consumer in line at a McDonalds waiting to order chicken nuggets. It’s finally your turn and you place your order with the cashier, only to find out they are out of chicken nuggets. Now you have to reconsider what you want to order and this takes about two minutes. The person behind you also wanted to order chicken nuggets for their toddler. They come up to the cashier and place their order, and are informed that McDonalds is out of chicken nuggets. They have to manage their toddlers fit and figure out what to order instead, which takes 3 minutes. This scenario has just lengthened the other customer’s time in line and has caused the line to grow longer.
As Chien and Lin point out waiting lines can negatively impact the customers state of mind (2015). Consumers perception of time in a waiting line often exceeds the actual amount of time they spend in a waiting line (Stevenson, 2015). Managers have to figure out how to combat this problem. The video Dr. Thompson shared shows how Disney developed a method to decrease the negative psychological implications of waiting in line. For some rides, Disney issues transponders in place of waiting in line. They then provide an air conditioned place for parents and children to wait that includes activities to keep the kids busy. When it’s their turn the transponder buzzes and they go to their ride. Now instead of being miserable and waiting in a thirty-minute ride, both the adults and the children have had the opportunity to cool down or play.
